Professor Emeritus/Emerita

Eligibility

Clinical Faculty

Clinical Faculty who held a full-time or part-time clinical academic appointment at the time of retirement and held their primary appointment at a fully affiliated or partially affiliated (community-based) site are eligible to be considered for Emeritus/Emerita status.

Status-Only Faculty

Status-Only faculty, including affiliated scientists, who held a primary appointment at a fully affiliated University teaching hospital and held the rank of Professor (Status-Only) or Associate Professor (Status-Only) for at least 10 years are eligible to be considered for Emeritus/Emerita (Status-Only) status.

Relevant University Policies

Application Process

Retiring faculty should write a letter to the UTDRO Chair indicating:

  • Their retirement date
  • Their interest in and intention to apply for Emeritus/Emerita status
  • Any planned future involvement in teaching, research, mentorship, or other academic activities

Future academic involvement is not mandatory.

The application then proceeds through the following approval process:

Department Appointments Committee → Department Chair → Dean’s Office → Provost’s Office
