Trainees
New Physics Residents 2024

We are excited to welcome our newest six residents to the 2024 cohort of the Medical Physics Residency Program! Scroll down to view their biographies.

Dr. Nico Arezza

Dr. Nico Arezza

Nico Arezza completed his PhD at Western University, supervised by Dr. Corey Baron and Dr. Ravi Menon. His research focused on the development and application of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging techniques. Outside of work, Nico enjoys staying active, reading, and spending time with his dogs. He is looking forward to joining the team at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

Dr. Stephen Collins

Dr. Stephen Collins

Stephen Collins is originally from Calgary, AB. He completed his PhD in Medical Physics at the University of British Columbia – Okanagan. His research involved analysis of iterative image reconstruction techniques for use in optical CT radiochromic gel dosimetry. When not in the laboratory, Steve enjoys snowboarding, golfing and playing hockey.

Dr. Helena Koniar

Dr. Helena Koniar

Helena Koniar completed her Ph.D. in Medical Physics in Vancouver at the University of British Columbia under the supervision of Dr. Paul Schaffer (TRIUMF) and Dr. Carlos Uribe (BC Cancer). Her research focused on assessing the biodistribution and dosimetry of actinium radiopharmaceuticals for applications in targeted alpha therapy.
Helena is very excited to join the team at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre for her Medical Physics Residency.

Dr. Naila Rahman

Dr. Naila Rahman

Naila Rahman completed her PhD in Medical Biophysics at Western University, supervised by Dr. Corey Baron, before joining the residency program at the Sunnybrook Hospital - Odette Cancer Centre. Her research focused on the application of microstructural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods, specifically advanced diffusion MRI, to a rodent model of concussion and adult brain maturation. She enjoys exploring new cafés and dessert spots with friends and is excited to explore new spots in Toronto.

Dr. Mandeep Singh

Dr. Mandeep Singh Reen

Mandeep Singh Reen holds bachelor's and master's degrees in Physics from Punjab University, India. He obtained his Ph.D. from Okayama University, Japan, specializing in measuring prompt gamma rays resulting from proton beam irradiation on 12C and 16O. Recently, he completed a CAMPEP-accredited M.Sc. in Clinical Medical Physics from Western University. He looks forward to joining the team at Durham Regional Cancer Centre for his Medical Physics Residency.

Dr. Sukhraj Virdee

Dr. Sukhraj Virdee

Sukhraj Virdee developed a deep interest in physics early on, thanks to his fascination with topics like spacetime, black holes, and the mysteries of the universe, inspired by science communicators like Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson. However, they decided they wanted to pursue a career in medical physics after discovering the profound impact physics could have in treating cancer. In their free time, Sukhraj enjoys weight training, biking, traveling to different countries to explore various cultures, and staying up to date with Bitcoin!
