Prospective Scholars

Co-funded by Princess Margaret Research (PMR), the Radiation Medicine Program (RMP), and the University of Toronto Department of Radiation Oncology (UTDRO; Gifford Fund), STARS21 provides partial stipend support to accepted, eligible trainees for 1 year.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be conducting translational radiation medicine research
  • Any trainee working towards an MSc, PhD, MD, Clinical Fellowship, Post-Doctoral Fellowship, or in a Residency Program that is affiliated with the sponsoring institutions, Princess Margaret Research (PMR) or Radiation Medicine Program (RMP)
  • Graduate students who meet specific eligibility criteria* may be offered funding through the endowed Gifford fund administered at the Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Toronto (*Ontario Graduate students supervised by graduate faculty appointed to the Department of Radiation Oncology, University of Toronto)
  • Other** (**The STARS21 Program accepts applications from all institutions. Trainees from other institutions (i.e. not PMR or RMP) are welcome to participate in the program as invited scholars. Invited scholars do not receive stipend support from the program)

Supervisors of accepted trainees will be granted status as STARS21 mentors for 3 years. Mentors are expected to contribute to the STARS21 program through invited presentations, review panels, judges/moderator appointments.

Application Review Criteria

  1. Call for Applications are sent out in June/July, inviting interested scholars to submit a Letter of Intent.
  2. Letters of Intent will be reviewed, with select scholars invited to submit a Full Application.
  3. Full Applications are reviewed and scored, and final selected scholars are contacted in September.
  4. Program runs October to May.

***Given that the start date for some clinical fellows and residents may be July 1st, there will be alternative deadlines for clinical fellows and residents to submit their LOI by August 7th, with Full Application due August 24th.
