Meet our newest radiation oncology residents!

2020 Residents

Jason Fernandes
 Jason Fernandes

I was born and raised in Mississauga, went to Western for my bachelor of science, and am completing my medical education at the University of Ottawa. During my undergrad degree, I started doing research under Dr. Czarnota at Sunnybrook Hospital with a focus being on furthering ultrasound as a diagnostic and therapeutic modality in cancer care. Outside of medicine, I enjoy weightlifting, soccer, and basketball. I am very excited to get started and meet the rest of the team!"

Looking forward to five amazing years filled with challenges and opportunities.

Bryce Thomsen

Bryce Thomsen

Bryce studied neuroscience for his undergraduate degree at the University of Alberta, before moving to Sydney, Australia, to work in international clinical trials project management for the department of neurology at the George Institute for Global Health, in partnership with Oxford and Peking University. He continued his passion for clinical trials research as a medical student at the University of Alberta, assisting the department of Otolaryngology to validate a novel HPV screening assay to detect oropharyngeal and cervical squamous cell carcinoma.

After participating in the CARO summer studentship at the BC Cancer Agency, Bryce was excited to pursue a career in Radiation Oncology, which combines his passion for technology and innovation with a high emphasis on patient interaction. His current research interests are in oligometastatic disease and HPV-related malignancy. In his spare time, Bryce is training for a triathlon and is excited to eat his way through Toronto!

Eric Zhao

Eric Zhao

Eric is excited to return to Toronto, where he has fond childhood memories up to the age of 10. Since then, he has been spoiled by the temperate Vancouver weather, and enjoys cycling, hiking, photography, flying drones, and making music. During his undergraduate studies, he developed parallel interests in medical biophysics and data science, which led him to enter the UBC MD/PhD program. In his PhD with the BC Cancer Personalized Oncogenomics Project, he developed novel genomic biomarkers by analyzing the whole genomes of metastatic cancers.

He had a memorable elective in Radiation Oncology at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and is so excited to join the UT-DRO as a resident. He looks forward to meeting everyone in the UT-DRO, immersing himself in clinical medicine and radiation oncology, and furthering his research interests.
