Dr. William Tran Honored with the 2023 Edmond Odette Prize for Pioneering AI Innovations in Cancer Care

Please join us in celebrating Dr. William Tran, an esteemed faculty member of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Toronto (UTDRO), who has been awarded the 2023 Edmond Odette Prize for Innovation and Technology in Cancer Care. Dr. Tran, a Radiation Therapist Clinician Scientist, Associate Professor of UTDRO, and Senior Scientist, has shown exemplary leadership in breast cancer and radiomics.

This prize recognizes individuals within the Odette Cancer Program who have made significant contributions to cancer care through developments in imaging, therapeutic, or other fundamental technologies. Dr. Tran's outstanding work in artificial intelligence (AI) has earned him this accolade, along with a $5,000 grant to further his research.

Dr. Tran’s research focuses on two key areas within AI: novel methodologies for advanced medical image analysis and the development of AI clinical prediction models. He and his research teams’ work has resulted in significant contributions to:

  • The curation and AI analysis of the largest breast cancer digital pathology dataset in Canada
  • Synthesis of novel methodologies in AI for automated cancer detection in digitized tumor biopsies
  • Discovery of an imaging biomarker signature associated with chemotherapy response in breast cancer

With a track record of sustained extramural funding totalling $4.8 million and peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Tran's research findings have been incorporated into clinical and scientific guidelines for breast cancer biomarkers nationally and internationally and documented in literature and educational textbooks. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to Dr. William Tran on this well-deserved recognition for his amazing contributions to advancing cancer care research.
