Biography
My name is Daniel Ilagan and I am in the Radiological Technology stream of the Medical Radiation Sciences Program. I enjoy playing video games (a lot), watching Netflix, and hanging out with my friends. I have had an interest in the sciences since elementary school, but never really knew what exactly I wanted to do. Through word of mouth, I heard of Michener and decided to inquire and give it a try. Ever since I got accepted, I decided to take full advantage of this new chapter in my life and have never looked back since.
What and where did you study before joining MRS?
I completed a double major in Biochemistry and Human Biology at the University of Toronto

Peterborough Regional Health Centre
What attracted you to the MRS program?
After completing a Bachelor of Science, not many students know exactly what they want to do or what profession they want to pursue. I knew I wanted to get into the health care profession, but wasn’t interested in the typical Med School or Nursing. The MRS program was attractive because of the variety of resources available through their connections to UHN and UofT.
How is MRS different from your previous university experience?
Your professors here really get to know you for who you are, rather than just being another student number in their class. Michener is a tight knit community where many of the peers that you graduate with may end up being your future coworkers. In addition to the lasting relationships you create, the courses you take directly apply to what you would practice in the real world.
Once you decided to pursue this field, why did you choose to study with us?
The Michener Institute is associated with UHN and thus provides many valuable resources and connections for prospective jobs. Michener also guarantees a clinical placement, which could have been a very cumbersome task had I had to do it myself. These placements could also serve as potential employers in the future.
What do you like best about the program?
The thing I like most about the program is the amount of hands on experience that is provided. In my program in particular (Radiological Technology), we have access to fully functional x-ray machines, CT (computer tomography) machines, and even surgical equipment such as C-arms to practice with. Having access to these machines has provided my peers and me with adequate experience that we can translate to our clinical placements.
What are your plans for after graduation?
After graduation, I plan to write my certification exam and hopefully start my career as a Radiological Technologist. I also look forward to travelling as much as I can.
Are you involved in extracurricular activities (clubs/sports) at U of T or Michener?
I was the Vice President of Finance for the Medical Radiation Sciences Society. We are a student run society that holds multiple events throughout the year for Michener Students, in particular, MRS students. I also served as the 2019 Class Representative for Radiological Technology on Student Council. In addition, I also worked in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) as a Student Assistant. I like to stay active by participating in Michener intramurals (basketball/volleyball), as well as making use of the Michener fitness facility.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are considering the program/profession?
Don’t be afraid to try something out of your comfort zone or ask questions if you aren’t sure of something. The professors are very knowledgeable and are willing to answer any questions regarding the program or profession.
