Biography

Growing up in New Brunswick I spent the majority of my time hiking, boating, and just enjoying the outdoors. I love to play sports including hockey, golf, tennis, and ringette. Before making the switch to the Radiation Therapy program I worked as a research assistant tagging and tracking Atlantic salmon. I made the switch to the MRS program because I have always had an interest in health sciences and I wanted a career in which I could help others, Radiation Therapy turned out to be the perfect fit.

What and where did you study before joining MRS?

I completed my undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of New Brunswick.

Where is your clinical placement?

Kingston General Hospital

What attracted you to the MRS program?

What attracted me to the MRS program was the mix of didactic in class learning as well as the hands on learning in lab and clinic. The mix gives you the opportunity to become well versed in the topics taught and then apply that topic in real life clinical settings. The clinical portion of the program allowed me to determine very early on in the program that I had made the right choice in choosing Radiation Therapy and showed me exactly what I could expect in the day to day job of a Radiation Therapist.

How is MRS different from your previous university experience?

The MRS program has provided a much more hands on learning experience compared to my previous university experience. In addition, the smaller class sizes help you feel more connected to your teachers and classmates.

Once you decided to pursue this field, why did you choose to study with us?

I chose to study with U of T and The Michener Institute because it offered a close community feeling with Michener while still offering access to all the various amenities found at the University of Toronto.

What do you like best about the program?

My favourite thing about the MRS program is the hands on learning provided both at school and out at clinic. I find learning the concepts much easier when you have the opportunity to apply those concepts in real life scenarios.

Are you involved in extracurricular activities (clubs/sports) at U of T or Michener?

During my time at U of T/ Michener, I served as the president of the Medical Radiation Science Society, a club that hosts events for MRS students. Some of the events we have hosted include a semi-formal dance, trivia nights, and bubble soccer. I am also involved in intramurals at Michener, playing dodgeball, volleyball, and floor hockey.

What are your plans for after graduation?

After graduation I hope to return to the East Coast and find a job as a Radiation Therapist.

What advice do you have for prospective students who are considering the program/profession?

I would advise prospective students to research their desired program well. Don’t be afraid to reach out to current or past students as well as faculty regarding any questions you may have about the program. The MRS program is an extremely rewarding program if it is the right fit for you.
