Janet Maggio

Janet Maggio from Barrie, Ontario
Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Technology Class of 2003

Biography

My education background includes: a B.Sc. (Biological Science) from the University of Guelph (2000) and a B.Sc. (Medical Radiation Science - Nuclear Medicine) from the University of Toronto/Michener (2003).  In 2009 I completed the MRI Certificate program from The Michener Institute and I have been dual certified in MRI and Nuclear Medicine Technology since then.  I am currently working on completion of my Masters Degree in Health Science Education from McMaster University.

My career background has included a mixture of Nuc Med and MRI clinical work.  I shared my love of the profession and taught in the NMMIT program at Michener for 10 years.  I have recently made the move to work with our Ontario Professional Association.

Where do you work?

Ontario Association of Medical Radiation Sciences

What is your current role?

Director, Professional Services

What is the most satisfying aspect of your work?

When I work in the field, the most satisfying aspect is (of course) the patients.  I love ensuring that they get great scans, while also having a good experience.  When I was teaching, I really lived for that a-ha moment when the students understood what was being taught.  Helping them become great practitioners was very rewarding.  My new position with OAMRS blends the two of these.  My goal here is to help members from every discipline improve their practice and go from being good health care workers, to being great health care workers!

What advice do you have for prospective students who are considering the program/profession?

Oh so much!  If I had to give some advice it would be: Get Involved!

Once you choose your career path, everyone is eager to get started and get out there - I know, I remember the excitement so well!  Try to be patient with the process.  Getting involved will help you to enjoy every moment along the way.  Learn all that you can while in school so that you are prepared and confident as you enter the work force!  I'm not just talking academics - get involved with the student body, student association, student groups, volunteer opportunities etc... The connections you make will last a lifetime and you never know what doors they will open along the way!
