Professors

Alejandro Berlin, MD, MSc

Alejandro Berlin is a Radiation Oncologist and Clinician-Investigator at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. As Medical Director of the Cancer Digital Intelligence Program since 2021, he leads innovations modernizing cancer care delivery. His leadership in virtual care during the COVID-19 pandemic earned international recognition. Dr. Berlin’s research focuses on advancing precision prostate cancer care through the integration of genomics, multi-parametric imaging (MRI/PSMA PET), and AI-enabled radiotherapy. He serves as PI or Co-PI on grants totaling more than $15 million in competitive funding. He holds leadership roles in international trials, including NRG GU010 (GUIDANCE) and NRG GU011 (PROMETHEAN).

Scott V. Bratman, MD, PhD

Scott Bratman is a Radiation Oncologist and Senior Scientist at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. In 2025, he assumed the role of Director of Research for the Radiation Medicine Program at University Health Network and currently holds the Dr. Mariano Antonio Elia Chair in Head & Neck Cancer Research. Dr. Bratman is an internationally recognized physician-scientist specializing in head and neck cancer. He has made seminal contributions to liquid biopsy technologies (circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) and DNA methylation). Dr. Bratman also leads major clinical trials such as MERIDIAN and TITRATE, and he serves as PI or Co-PI on peer-reviewed grants totaling ~ $10 million. His research has shaped biomarker-guided cancer care and influenced international clinical practice.

Associate Professor

Michael Velec, PhD, FCAMRT

Michael Velec is a Radiation Therapist, Clinician Scientist and Program Leader for MR-Guided Radiotherapy at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. He specializes in image-guided and adaptive radiation therapy and is internationally recognized for his contributions to motion management and image registration for gastrointestinal and liver cancers. He co-leads a prospective MR-linac adaptive radiotherapy cohort of more than 600 patients and serves as a local PI for the global MOMENTUM MR-linac registry. His research has shaped international practice standards, including new radiation therapist models-of-care and contributions to the joint ESTRO–AAPM AI guidelines. Dr. Velec has secured over $500,000 in research funding and is a frequent international speaker. 

This year, 169 faculty members across the Temerty Faculty of Medicine were recognized through senior academic promotions, including 63 promoted to Professor and 106 promoted to Associate Professor.
